Mitigating Fire Risks Through Garden Design & Maintenance (2-part series)

After a dry winter and spring, many California residents are bracing for another season of catastrophic wildfires this summer. With climate change and shifts in land management, the intensity and regular occurrence of wildfires will be inevitable in our environment. The decisions that we make in our own gardens can make a bigger impact than most people realize. Join us, for a two-part series about how a multi-faceted, interconnected lifetime of decisions in your landscape can help mitigate your risks versus fire. (one hour each webinar session)

cost is $30. members of Ruth Bancroft Garden, $40. non-members.

Pleasant Hill Garden Study Club

Over ZOOM: We hope to impart an understanding of gardens in the context of fire, rather than working off plant lists and generic advice.  Her goal is helping people understand the reasoning behind the “defensible zones”, how fires move, why the common recommendations can be misleading, and what we can all realistically do about it.  She emphasizes that everyone can do something, regardless of how much land they steward or where they live.  She will be discussing typical fire behavior, the synergies (and sometimes tension) between fire and the environment, and how we can select and care for plants to reduce our risk factors outside.  Photo by kevin Ruiz chávez on Unsplash

Russian River Watershed Association "Plants vs. Vire"

Soils are living ecosystems and when landscaping practices allow the soil food web to thrive, it can filter pollution, store water, provide plant nutrients, and help plants resist pests naturally. This is also key in keeping plants healthy so that they can be as resistant to fire as possible for their kind. Photo by DESIGNECOLOGIST on Unsplash

CLCA East Bay - Firescaping for Landscape Contractors

The workflow of contractors is one aspect of “firescaping” that has little written about it.  Knowledge in this area is becoming a critical “value-add” for our clients and an important means of elevating the work of the informed contractor!  It will include a brief introduction to the challenge of fire and the potentials & limitations of “firescaping”.  While the focus will be on a handful of issues that must be understood in performing installations, we will also address some common design and maintenance issues.  Our goal will be towards gaining a deeper understanding of our own responsibilities and abilities to mitigate risk while serving our clients.  Photo by DESIGNECOLOGIST on Unsplash

Nerd Nite East Bay - Flora Firewall: Fighting Fires With Flowers

Wildfires can burn at a rate of nearly fifteen miles per hour, so human understanding of how different plants respond to fire conditions is crucial. Firescaping looks at how aesthetic concerns interact with safety, and how a deeper knowledge of plant physiology and classification can help prevent plants from becoming tiki torches. Learn how clever combinations of plant cuttings and smart species sequencing may contribute to your own elegant flora firewall. (video in link) Photo by DESIGNECOLOGIST on Unsplash
